An intelligent approach to sustainable gardens for the future
We do more than just design and construct beautiful gardens. We create unique spaces for people to connect with each other and with nature. Our exceptionally well-designed spaces blur the boundaries of the built and natural environment. Every project is a reflection of our client’s personality, and the design strikes the perfect balance between function and architectural form

Sustainability is at the heart of our garden and landscape designs–striking a beautiful harmony between function and eco-friendliness
Angus Drover, director & owner of Ground Up: Gardens and landscapes are no longer adjuncts to homes. These outdoor living spaces are priorities finding roots in workplaces, train stations, rooftops, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, bars, shopping centres, airports and homes–giving us living green spaces to connect and relax
“Sustainability is a fundamental of intelligent design and provides wellbeing for people and planet. We meet the demands of our clients to find this balance whilst meeting their brief.”
Every client we work with is unique and every garden we create has its own personality.
A successful garden design begins with a detailed consultation. We take the time to create a design that reflects your needs and compliments your green space. The most rewarding step of the process is handover that’s when you get to enjoy your new space.

Case study | Project: Medibank Place , Melbourne
Medibank’s headquarters in Melbourne’s Docklands was transformed in 2014 as part of an AU$21 million landscape design project to improve employee well being. Landscape architect Natalie Bush designed the garden which included planting 2100 trees and 160,000 shrubs throughout the 32 hectare site, including inside the building and in the courtyards.
As a result, about 70% of employees reported feeling healthier, and 66% said they felt more productive.
Bush’s design factored in access to outdoor spaces and views of green and living things. Contemplative spaces featured birds and flowers, and every window overlooked the garden, an important consideration for the most vulnerable unable to venture outside.
The Intensive Care Unit included an outdoor experience for very sick patients to venture outside and feel the sun. Many others benefitted from ‘sunshine therapy’ with rehabilitation sessions outside.
Masses of rock were craned up to the rooftop garden, and mounds of different coloured gravel and foliage plants were used to create interest.
The ward towers looked down onto the site, creating a visually exciting garden that could be explored from the windows to help reduce stress.
The use of biophilic design or integrating greenery into built environments is a concept adopted by hospitals worldwide. Our own Professor Fiona Stanley, a renowned public health researcher and 2003 Australian of the Year, believes the natural environment promotes healing.
